Kiehl's Rare Earth Pore Refining Tonic

I hate pores. I love Kiehl’s. I am lucky enough to have an awesome friend who works at Kiehl’s who got me some sweet hookups. I amassed a hefty haul (see below) but the first thing on my list to try was the Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Refining Tonic.

You can’t even imagine my glee at getting this in the mail.

Anyway.

I recently ran out of my last toner, Mizon AHA & BHA Daily Clean Toner, but wanted to check out something new. I was a virgin to Kiehl’s, and something was very, very wrong about that. After perusing the website a bit, I became entranced with the Rare Earth collection–a wonderment that was made for people with angsty pores and oily skin like myself. I decided on the cleanser and the toner. And now here we are.

The facts:

Mattifying
Refining
Oil control
Cleansing

From Kiehl’s:

A dual-phase pore minimizing facial toner

Helps remove excess dirt and toxins for clean skin
Helps to control surface oil and refine the look of pores throughout the day
Skin will appear softer, smoother and more matte with healthy radiance

Mattifies skin and minimizes pores. This dual-phase toner is formulated with oil-absorbing Amazonian white clay to refine pores and control shine. With ingredients sourced from the Marajo Island at the mouth of the Amazon River, this unique formula is rich in minerals and helps eliminate surface toxins from skin. This formula rebalances skin’s moisture levels for a smoother and healthier appearance.

Ingredients:

Aqua / Water, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Silica, Zinc Oxide, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Kaolin, Methylparaben, Zinc Gluconate, Aloe Barbadensis / Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Avena Sativa Flour / Oat Kernel Flour, Menthoxypropanediol, Hamamelis Virginiana Distillate / Witch Hazel Water, Allantoin, Salicylic Acid.

Allantoin is a compound that is found in Comfrey Root. The comfrey plant is a hairy perennial Eurasian herb long used in herbal medicine. Known to be a bacteria inhibitor, Allantoin can soothe and reduce inflammation in various product formulations.

I’ve read a bunch of reviews of this product where people seem to think this is alcohol-free. I’m really confused by that. It has denatured alcohol as the second ingredient. It also has salicylic acid in it, so if you have extremely sensitive skin I’d suggest something milder without an astringent.

First things first, the Amazonian white clay in this settles to the bottom. The toner appears clear, but no! Vigorous shaking must commence.

Right before the vigorous shaking, I tipped it just slightly so you can see the clay. Or maybe I just wanted to have a fancy picture. Whatever.

Once shaken, twice shy.

Right off the bat I discovered that this toner is best when applied directly with your hands. I’m a cotton pad fiend so this is kind of sad, but the truth hurts. Cotton just absorbs up all the clay and you won’t get the desired effect. So, as much as I dislike using my hands with toner (SO MESSY) that’s what I do.

This toner is very gentle with a subtle astringent. It’s cooling and has a light, clay + toner-y scent, but nothing bad. As SOON as the product is applied, your skin will absorb the clay and be perfectly, wonderfully matte. Like a dream. However, for my super oily skin, I found it only lasted a short time, with no huge effect on oil control throughout the day. I didn’t make my skin produce any more oil than usual though, so that’s a plus. If you have dry skin, this might be a bit TOO drying for you, but if you have combo to slightly oily skin I think it would work a lot better. My pores do feel tighter after using this for awhile, but they are still there, staring at me. Because my pores are the PORES OF HELL.

The Rare Earth collection also includes a Pore Cleansing Masque, a Deep Pore Daily Cleanser, and a Pore Minimizing Lotion.

Pros: Instantly mattifying, tightens pores.
Cons: Not long-lasting oil control, expensive at $21 USD.

Final Verdict: I might consider repurchasing, but there are so many toners I have yet to try… If you’re interested, you can find it at Kiehl’s.
